Press Releases
MacDaddy is pleased to announce Mac Backup Guru 4.0 for OS X, an update to its innovative utility that has three main features: 1) It provides a contextual menu to copy and paste a bootable volume in the Finder and 2) It’s the only third party disk utility that provides Incremental Snapshots in OS X. And 3) It provides straightforward clone/sync functionality, with security that the sync is reliable.
Mac Backup Guru is the first third party disk utility that produces incremental backups of a filesystem. Incremental Snapshots use only a small fraction of the disk space to store daily versioned backups which can be accessed via the Finder and appear to be standard copies. This is done by employing hardlinks to the original files for unaltered files. Mac Backup Guru also offers the more traditional clone and sync functionality, with built in Contextual Menu Items in the Finder to make it easier access its capabilities and streamline the user interface.
Feature Highlights:
* Simple, reliable utility to create copies of files
* The only third party disk utility which can create Incremental Snapshots
* Incremental Snapshots use about one tenth of the space of a standard backup
* Incremental Snapshots are about ten times faster to make than standard copies
* Can Copy & Paste a bootable drive in the Finder
* Simple animated user interface
Update Highlights:
* Copy and Paste contextual menu items implemented in the Finder
* All backup operations are resumable
* Copy & Paste Contextual Item in Finder (OS X 10.10 Yosemite only)
Mac Backup Guru Incremental Snapshots work differently from traditional disk backups. These initially makes a full clone, and for subsequent backups only copy files that have been added or changed since the original backup. All other files create a hardlink to the original file in the last backup that was made. Users can rest assured that future filesystem backups will not alter or completely wipe out previous backups, and that if they delete a file in their startup disk that the next sync that runs will not delete that same file on their backup drive. By employing this technique a typical user can store 30 unique daily snapshots of their 1TB disk on their 1.5TB external backup disk.
For the Synchronization functionality Mac Backup Guru ensures that the synced backup maintains a level of data integrity equal to that following the initial clone. This reliability is borne of the simple logic inherent in the process. In order to achieve reliable sync, 3 basic rules are followed:
1. If the size of the file on the Source is different from that on the Destination, the file has changed.
2. If the modification time on the Source is different from than on the Destination, the file has changed.
3. If the file has changed, replace the one on the Destination with the file from the Source.
Even under the harshest conditions, this method produces perfectly synced Destination disks, which will always boot up and perform like the original. And the user interface is also simplified. The large empty icon window on the left is labeled Select Source, followed by a right-pointing arrow and another icon window labeled Select Destination. Having selected the Source and Destination, the user just clicks the Backup button and the rest is automatic.
A. Newer files from the Source will replace older files on the Destination. This is how synchronization is provided.
B. The first time you backup it will be slow, but after that only updated files will be copied so that it will usually only take a few minutes to backup an entire drive.
C. If you select volumes in HFS+ format rather than folders to backup to and from, the backup will be bootable.
“The truth is, we originally wrote this program because we needed something just like it, but nothing out there was suitable,” commented Ben Slaney of MacDaddy. “Now we are offering it to you and we’re excited to share a faster and more intuitive Mac Backup Guru that gives you more control, and is integrated with the OS X Finder. You can download it free, and it’s fully functional. Please try it, use it regularly, and we hope that you love it as much as we do.”

Mac Backup Guru 2.0 Launches
Simple, fast and safe backup for novices and professionals alike
August 13, 2014 – Today Mac Backup Guru developer MacDaddy released Mac Backup Guru 2.0. Mac Backup Guru offers advanced features, such as bootable backups, synchronised volumes and folders, and a Snapshot mode that uses system hard links to save space. Yet the interface is designed to be simple to understand and clutter free, so that novices and professionals alike can take advantage of its powerful features.
Developer Ben Slaney was keen to update Mac Backup Guru because his other product, Data Recovery Guru is only able to recover data on hard disks. Ben says, “The proliferation of Solid State Drives in Mac laptops is a worry for me. Like hard drives, they have a limited lifespan, but unlike hard drives, when an SSD fails, there is no way to recover the lost files.”
Mac Backup Guru 2.0 is designed with a simple interface, to give users a simple way to secure their data. But the simple exterior hides some very advanced features. It works with local hard drives, so it is always fast to back up, and just as importantly, fast to restore. The two modes available allow the user to restore files or whole systems within minutes.
Synchronized Clone Backup
This mode is designed to keep an up to date, bootable copy of the system drive or individual folders. If the worst happens and your system drive fails, simply restart the machine from the clone backup, and you are instantly up and running again. The drive is synchronised daily, but can be manually done at the touch of a button. Perfect for a last minute backup before taking a laptop on a trip.
Backup with Incremental Snapshots
This mode will also allow a full bootable copy of a system drive, so users can be back up and running immediately if they suffer a failed drive. But this mode also takes Snapshots of the hard drive, so that if files were accidentally deleted, the user can look back at previous back ups to find the missing file.
This Snapshot mode may sound like it would require large amounts of storage space. However, because Mac Backup Guru uses OS X system hard links, it only needs as much storage as the original drive, plus the space that the deleted files require. This means a months worth of Snapshots, each a full backup, can fit on a drive barely larger than the original backup.
Fast to backup, instant to restore
The initial backup may take some time, in either mode. But subsequent backups or Snapshots only copy the changed files, so are extremely fast. In the event of a disk failure, simply boot from the external drive and instantly be up and running again.
A perfect copy
Mac Backup Guru makes a perfect copy of the data every time, including file permissions and metadata. Many other Mac backup applications, including Apple’s own Time Machine app, fail to retain things like metadata. This can cause problems, especially if the data backed up includes the system files.
Ben Slaney commented, “I discovered that the vast majority of backup software for the Mac doesn’t do a great job of keeping the integrity of the files it copies. Even Apple’s own Time Machine fails to make a perfect copy of things like metadata, which can cause serious problems. So I made sure that Mac Backup Guru 2.0 makes perfect copies every time”.
Plays nicely with online backup and synchronization services
Mac Backup Guru is designed to use local storage, as this means users can immediately get back up and running in case of disaster. But we understand that many users like to use services like DropBox, or other online backup services.
These services are great as a second line of defence, as keeping an off-site backup is good practice. The only drawback being the length of time it takes to restore from an online service (it could be days or even weeks!). But Mac Backup Guru 2.0 supports these services, and won’t conflict with their work.
Availability and system requirements
Mac Backup Guru 2.0 is available now as a direct download from https://macdaddy.io The Price is $29 USD, which is at time of writing approximately $ 28.52 (), or $ 29.36 ()

Battery Guru 1.5 Popular and Free App for OS X: Battery Life Monitoring
MacDaddy released Battery Guru 1.5 free for OS X, their highly popular battery monitoring system that resides in the menu bar and displays essential current information about the current state of the battery. Battery Guru monitors and presents real-time information on exactly how much current a battery is using at any given moment and display it in the menu bar, allowing users to monitor drain and become aware of life sapping applications and pages the moments after they appear.

Battery Guru monitors and presents real-time information on exactly how much current a battery is using at any given moment and display it in the menu bar, allowing users to monitor battery life and manage applications and web pages that are draining the battery excessively. Displaying the current battery capacity, the amount of charge it can hold compared to when it was new, the number of times a battery has been discharged and recharged, the date a battery was manufactured, exact battery temperature, and an accurate percentage of the current charge of a battery, Battery Guru give users precise information to better manage and optimize battery life.
Version 1.5 is an upgrade to version 1.0 which was released 6 months ago and quickly climbed the ranks of the Mac App Store, at its peak reaching the second most downloaded app overall on the German edition of the Mac App Store, making it the second most downloaded item of all programs of all categories, surpassed only by OS X 10.8 “Mountain Lion” itself, distributed as a downloadable self-installer.
Battery Guru allows you to get more life out of your battery. Like with most resource usage, most of the batteries power goes to causes which are unimportant to you, but the charge gets squandered because without this app you are unaware of what is using it. Battery Guru will monitor and present current information on exactly how much charge a battery is using at any given moment and display it in the menu bar. This allows users to keep an eye on power consumption and close unnecessary pages or applications that are draining the battery. After becoming accustomed to the application, it will become second nature to keep an eye on the amount of power that is being used, and to notice when it is higher than it should be and to start closing down likely culprits.
Battery Guru will also show how you fast your battery is recharging. This can be very useful information because the charge rate of a battery also drastically varies, depending on various factors. You will understand what they are, and understand the optimal amount of time to charge a battery for if you want to go on to use portably as quickly as possible afterwards.
Feature Highlights:
* See how fast your battery is discharging. Useful for preserving life.
* See how fast your battery is charging. Useful to see optimal charge times and battery health.
* Precise information to better manage and optimize battery life
* View current battery capacity and milliamps usage
* Easily identify and manage battery-draining applications
* Tools help optimize battery life
* Access important battery information to optimize system usage
* Information on number of recharges and manufacturing date
When using a computer, the amount of time a user has until the battery runs out varies drastically. The reason a battery sometimes drains quickly is usually due to one of two reasons. Sometimes an app that is not even in use will remain in the background constantly using 100% of one processor core and draining the battery. Having a Flash application open in a tab is a common cause of this phenomenon. Secondly, a MacBook Pro comes with two graphics cards: one that uses little power, and one that is much more powerful and uses significantly more power. If a user is running OS Lion on a more recent MacBook Pro, the OS will automatically switch between the two. However, occasionally an app or a webpage will remain open, holding the power-hungry graphics card open, and unnecessarily draining the battery charge.
Battery Guru also provides a secondary but equally important function. By providing information that users do not usually have access to, this app gives users the tools to optimize their battery life and function. It will show the current battery capacity compared to the capacity it had when it was new. It also provides information on the number of times a battery has been discharged and recharged, the date a battery was manufactured, and the exact battery temperature. Battery Guru’s information on current battery charge is a more exact percentage than provided by the operating system, giving users accurate and actionable battery information.
Each portable Mac comes with a “Smart Battery,” that already knows this battery information and holds it internally. Battery Guru is the means of accessing this relevant information, allowing monitoring of the current battery state and awareness of the functioning of the computer system. Users may set Battery Guru to start automatically at login, providing a seamless interface with the computer system.
Version 1.5 brings in:
* Temperature display in Fahrenheit as well as Celsius
* Improved graphics
* Various bug fixes and improvements
“The battery you have in your portable Mac may be a lot more sophisticated than you were aware of,” states MacDaddy’s CEO, Ben Slaney. “And you can get more usage out of it! Battery Guru is the means to accessing the advanced information your battery holds internally. Once you get used to having it in your menu bar, you will never want to be without it again.”

Mac Backup Guru for OS X: Simple and Trustworthy Bootable Back Up + Sync
MacDaddy today announces Mac Backup Guru 1.0 for OS X, an update to its innovative utility designed to back up files and disks reliably and simply. Traditionally, backing up a disk required either cloning, trustworthy but time consuming, or syncing, fast but not foolproof. Mac Backup Guru offers the best of both methods, easily and quickly producing a backup the user can rely upon. With a single Start button, the user can perfectly sync the contents of any Source with its backup Destination.
MacDaddy today is pleased to announce Mac Backup Guru 1.0 for OS X, an update to its innovative utility designed to back up files and disks reliably and simply. Traditionally, backing up a disk required either cloning, trustworthy but time consuming, or standard syncing, fast but not foolproof. Mac Backup Guru offers the best of both methods, easily and quickly producing a backup disk that Mac owners can rely upon. With a single Start button, the user can perfectly sync the contents of any Source with its backup Destination.
Feature Highlights:
* Simple, reliable utility to back up folders or disks
* Disk backups of startup drives are bootable
* If there is any inconsistency in the size or modification date between any files, the Source file replaces the outdated Destination file
* Following the initial cloning, syncs take minutes instead of hours
* Operation is automatic, with just a single Start button
Disk backup via cloning requires that the entire contents of the Source overwrite the entire contents of the Destination drive. Disk backup via sync requires that only the changes since that last backup overwrite the appropriate part of the Destination drive. Backup via sync requires that the initial backup be cloned, but all subsequent backups can be synced. Syncing ignores the vast majority of files that are identical on the Source and Destination, and it concentrates on only those files that have been updated or added since the last sync. This intelligent backup method is comparable to MPEG video compression, where only the difference between successive frames is recorded (until a new I-frame).
Mac Backup Guru employs advanced algorithms to ensure that the synced backup maintains a level of data integrity equal to that following the initial clone. This reliability is borne of the simple logic inherent in the process. In order to achieve reliable sync, 3 basic rules are followed:

- If the file has changed, replace the one on the Destination with the file from the Source.
Even under the harshest conditions, this method produces perfectly synced Destination disks, which will always boot up and perform like the original. And using Mac Backup Guru is as simple as the logic upon which it is based. The large empty icon window on the left is labeled Select Source, followed by a right-pointing arrow and another icon window labeled Select Destination. Having selected the Source and Destination, the user just clicks the Backup button and the rest is automatic.
